Residentials, Camps and Expeditions

Residentials, camps and expeditions let pupils apply their learning beyond the classroom, building independence and strong relationships through shared challenge. The programme progresses from a one-night Prep School residential to more demanding Senior School camps and journeys.

Years 3 and 4

A one-night residential at Bryntysilio Outdoor Education Centre — often pupils’ first time away from home with school. In a supportive setting, they build confidence and personal organisation: managing belongings, following shared routines and supporting friends through outdoor activities together.

Years 5 and 6

The residential alternates between two contrasting environments. At Bryntysilio, a journeying-focused stay includes hillwalking, scrambling and gorge walking, building resilience and teamwork through physical challenge. On Anglesey, a coastal residential brings rock-pool exploration, kayaking, coasteering and Beach School — developing water confidence and coastal awareness. Alternating between mountain and coast gives pupils broad experience before the Senior School.

Years 7, 8 and 9

Camps sit at the heart of the Learning Through the Outdoors curriculum, each showcasing a year’s developed skills:

  • Year 7 — pupils apply hillwalking, campcraft, climbing and rope skills: organising equipment, a night under canvas, a mountain journey and summit, and a more adventurous abseil.
  • Year 8 (bushcraft camp) — outdoor-living skills come together as pupils prepare equipment, build shelters, cook outdoors and take on greater camp responsibility, with emphasis on resilience, teamwork and self-reliance.
  • Year 9 (mountain camp) — the culmination of the LTTO journey, combining navigation, campcraft, expedition planning and decision-making in a more demanding mountain setting, with pupils expected to operate independently and contribute positively to the group.
