KS3 (Year 8) – Learning Through The Outdoors

Year 8 pupils continue their full day of Learning Through the Outdoors every two weeks, building on Year 7’s foundations with a stronger focus on technical skill, independence, environmental responsibility and supporting others.

The year opens with a team journey on Moel Famau, re-establishing expectations for preparedness and group travel, before pupils return to climbing — selecting and checking their own PPE and applying techniques with greater control.

Movement and terrain

Bouldering and problem-solving at Milestone Buttress develop balance and footwork on more complex ground, applied during a journey on Moel yr Hydd that may include scrambling and exploring the area’s historic mining tunnels and inclines — linking physical challenge with North Wales’s slate heritage.

Navigation and conservation

Navigation lessons at Sychnant Pass build map interpretation and route choice, put into practice through orienteering at Bodlondeb Woods. Pupils also work with the Clwydian Range Rangers on Moel Famau, learning about habitat management and their role as custodians of the outdoors.

Bushcraft and canoeing

In woodland near Denbigh Castle, pupils design and build their own shelters, process wood, practise knife safety and light fires independently. A canoeing day on the Llangollen Canal builds boat control and paddling technique through tandem teamwork.

Bushcraft camp

Pupils bring their outdoor-living skills together at a bushcraft camp — preparing kit, building shelters, cooking outdoors and helping organise camp — with a night outdoors testing resilience, independence and leadership.

Closing the year

Pupils revisit climbing to show their technical progress, take part in a beach ecology study of coastal habitats, and finish with an adventurous gorge walk at Afon Ddu, applying their movement, teamwork and decision-making skills in a dynamic setting.

Throughout, pupils take on greater responsibility for their kit, PPE and choices, with activities differentiated so every pupil is pushed beyond their comfort zone while building genuine outdoor competence.
