Myddelton College Praised in Latest Estyn Inspection

Posted: 8th September 2025

We are delighted to share the fantastic news that Myddelton College has been highly praised in its most recent Estyn inspection, which took place in the summer, with the report published in August 2025. The findings celebrate our nurturing, inclusive culture, our broad and enriching curriculum, and the high quality of teaching and care we provide to every pupil.

Since opening our doors in 2016, Myddelton College has grown into a thriving co-educational independent boarding and day school located in the heart of Denbigh. Today, we proudly educate 281 pupils across our preparatory and senior schools, including a flourishing sixth form community.

A Welcoming and Supportive Community

The Estyn report commended the strong sense of belonging and pride felt by our pupils and families, highlighting the value placed on our close-knit community where every individual is known, respected, and supported.

The inspectors recognised the importance we place on emotional and social development, praising initiatives such as our dedicated well-being room and the tranquil “Secret Garden”, which provide safe spaces where pupils can relax, reflect, and recharge.

Pupil voice was also highlighted as a particular strength, with our school and well-being councils playing an active role in driving positive changes across the school. From raising awareness of key social issues to leading charitable projects, our pupils continue to demonstrate leadership, compassion, and responsibility.

High-Quality Teaching and a Broad Curriculum

The inspection praised the breadth and depth of our curriculum, which is enriched by a wide range of co-curricular opportunities. Our innovative Learning Through the Outdoors (LTTO) programme was singled out as a standout feature, helping pupils develop resilience, confidence, and problem-solving skills alongside their academic learning.

In our preparatory school, inspectors noted the vibrant learning environment created by our skilled and collaborative teachers. Pupils make rapid progress in reading, writing, oracy, and independence, supported by engaging lessons, individualised feedback, and positive teacher-pupil relationships.

In the senior school, classrooms are described as purposeful, engaging, and supportive, with pupils demonstrating high levels of confidence, digital literacy, and subject knowledge. Where teaching is strongest, inspectors highlighted the use of creative lesson structures, effective questioning, and meaningful feedback to deepen pupil understanding and drive progress.

Forward-Looking Leadership

The inspection also recognised the impact of our new Headteacher, who joined in September 2024, alongside our senior leadership team. Together, they are fostering a culture of openness, accountability, and ambition, supported by a refreshed advisory committee structure designed to offer reflective and strategic guidance.

Estyn praised our four strategic improvement objectives, which are being pursued with enthusiasm and energy. Among these, two key priorities will continue to shape our journey forward:

  • Embedding consistent approaches to evaluate pupils’ progress across all stages.

  • Further strengthening the quality and consistency of teaching across the school.

These next steps reflect our ongoing commitment to ensuring every pupil thrives, academically and personally.

Celebrating Success, Shaping the Future

We are incredibly proud of the praise received in this inspection, which recognises the dedication of our staff, pupils, and families in making Myddelton College such a special place to learn and grow.

This report not only celebrates our successes but also guides our continuous journey of improvement, ensuring that Myddelton College remains a nurturing, ambitious, and inspiring community for every pupil.

“Myddelton College fosters a nurturing, inclusive culture in which pupils quickly develop a sense of belonging and pride.” — Estyn Inspection Report 2025
