Rationing and Evacuees – Guest Speakers Bring WW2 to Life
Last week the Prep had a very special visitor. Seren McCabe-Allen’s grandfather came to school to tell us about his experience as an evacuee from Liverpool to Denbigh during WW2. He showed us some coins from the era and brought in his gas mask for us all to try on. Prior to his visit, we had written letters from an evacuee using the knowledge we had gained in Topic lessons and through our Guided Reading book, Wave Me Goodbye written by Jacqueline Wilson. Following his visit, we are writing newspaper articles reporting on the event.
We were lucky enough to have a second guest speaker this week. Our school chef, Lee came to class to speak to us about rationing during the war. We looked at a ration book and posters which encourage people to grow their own vegetables and “make do and mend”.
